Abiraterone Acetate

Abiraterone acetate is now an approved treatment for men with progressive metastatic disease following chemotherapy. It is marketed under the name Zytiga. The drug is taken once a day by mouth in combination with Prednisone. This drug affects the hormones produced in the adrenal gland and also in the tumor. Another study was recently stopped because it showed a significant benefit in men who were progressing on hormone therapy but had not yet received chemotherapy. Many insurance companies already are paying for its use before chemotherapy is used but the FDA has not yet evaluated these new results. This is an important advancer in the treatment of this disease.
